What Is Organisational Psychology?

Organisational psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour in the workplace. It applies psychological theory, research, and evidence-based methods to understand how people think, behave, and interact at work, and how organisations can create environments that support both employee wellbeing and organisational performance.

Sometimes called workplace psychology or industrial-organisational psychology, the field helps organisations make informed decisions about people, leadership, culture, and workplace systems. Its focus is practical: translating psychological insight into workplace strategies that help people and organisations thrive.

What Does Organisational Psychology Focus On?

Organisational psychology covers several areas that influence how workplaces function, including:

  • Leadership development and coaching to strengthen people management capabilities.

  • Team dynamics and collaboration to improve communication, trust, and alignment.

  • Organisational culture and employee engagement to better understand workplace experiences and performance drivers.

  • Psychosocial wellbeing and risk management to identify and address workplace factors that can affect psychological health.

  • Change management to support organisations during periods of growth, transformation, or disruption.

While researchers study workplace behaviour to build knowledge, organisational psychologists apply that knowledge in real-world settings. At Altius, organisational psychology services focus on helping organisations address practical workplace challenges through evidence-based interventions.

Why Do Organisations Invest in Organisational Psychology?

Organisations often invest in organisational psychology to strengthen leadership capability, improve workplace culture, support employee wellbeing, and create sustainable performance.

Research also supports the business case for taking action. In PwC’s industry report, Creating a Mentally Healthy Workplace: Return on Investment Analysis, organisations that successfully implement appropriate workplace mental health actions can expect, on average, a positive return on investment of 2.3. In practical terms, every dollar spent can return an average of $2.30 in organisational benefits.

Evidence-based organisational psychology programs can help employers address challenges such as turnover, disengagement, workplace conflict, poor team alignment, and psychosocial risks. Rather than relying on assumptions, organisational psychologists use data, assessments, and best-practice behavioural science to guide decision-making and workplace improvement efforts.

At Altius, our organisational psychology team helps organisations build healthier workplaces where people can perform at their best. When people thrive, organisational performance follows.
