What Does a Return-to-Work Coordinator Do?

A Return-to-Work (RTW) Coordinator manages the process of helping an injured or ill employee return-to-work safely and sustainably. The role combines recovery planning, stakeholder communication and legislative compliance to support both the worker’s health and the employer’s obligations.

RTW coordination focuses on early intervention, structured planning and clear communication throughout the recovery journey.

Key Responsibilities of a Return-to-Work Coordinator

Day‑to‑day RTW coordinator responsibilities include developing return‑to‑work plans aligned with medical advice, coordinating with treating practitioners, maintaining communication between the employee, treating health practitioners and the insurer, on behalf of the employer worker, and ensuring reporting obligations are met. Coordinators also identify suitable duties, monitor progress and adjust plans as capacity improves.

These activities help reduce time away from work and support improved workplace injury recovery outcomes.

When Should an Employer Engage an RTW Coordinator?

Employers typically engage an RTW coordinator following a workplace injury notification, when a worker is absent for an extended period, or when a claim becomes complex. In some jurisdictions, larger organisations are required to appoint a trained RTW coordinator, while others may engage one voluntarily to manage risk and compliance.

Outsourced RTW coordination allows employers to access professional expertise without employing an internal specialist. Altius supports businesses across Australia with compliant, practical return-to-work program management.
